Sordid Lives has two main threads running through it: Ty, a young man who has moved from a small town in Texas to Los Angeles to be an actor, and his relatives back home, including a crazy (as in mental hospital) uncle "Brother Boy" (Leslie Jordan). Ty is a closet case, struggling to come out even to himself, getting no sympathy from his therapist, but offered a helping hand from an actor auditioning for the same play. Of course, it's obvious to everyone else that Ty is as queer as a three-dollar bill. (Historical footnote: the Republic of Texas, from 1836 to 1845, did have a $3 bill) Meanwhile, back in Texas, Mama has gone missing and Brother Boy is dealing with the crippling news that his idol Tammy Wynette has passed on.
Sordid Lives is a campy, over-the-top soap opera, but it needn't be a shameful "guilty pleasure." Hold your head up high and enjoy it openly. Highly recommended
