A man's face looks out through the bushes
Perro perro

“Men are dogs.” Imagine a fairy-tale world in which, instead of Dogs and Cats, people have pet Men and Women running around with no clothes. It sets up all manner of allegorical possibilities to comment on our relationships with our pets as well as our relationships with other humans.

Juan and his (human) girlfriend plus a couple of other (human) friends are taking a week’s vacation in the country, on a small island where most travel is by boat. Juan sees a Man peering out from the bushes, and the Man follows him home. There is an instant bond between them, with Juan giving the Man food, a bath, and lots of affection, including belly rubs and sloppy kisses. Juan’s girlfriend warns against getting too attached, because there’s no way they can take the Man with them back to Buenos Aires, but Juan is in deep. What will happen at the end of the week when Juan has to go home and the Man has to stay on the island?

There is plenty of comedy and good fun in the story, but also some profound insight into humans and our interactions, the line between affection and eroticism, the human need for connection, and even the pain of loss. The black-and-white photography adds to the feeling of being in a fairy tale, and the Man (Juan Ramos, pictured) speaks volumes without saying a word. It’s beautiful, fun, funny, and thought-provoking, definitely a must see.
