Matt & Dan: “Sex Notes”

Matt & Dan: “Sex Notes”
We begin with two guys in bed, having just had what they both agree was “really good,” “amazing” sex. Then the clincher: “…but I have a few notes.” The laundry list of what was good and what “needs work” gets progressively more surreal. Very cute sendup of Hollywood, worth seeing, so don’t oversleep and miss the first short! (Also note that this is one episode of a web series, so there’s more when you get back to your computer.)

Femme
Femme • BAY AREA PREMIERE

Carson (Corey Camperchioli) schleps across town for a promising hookup, only to see his intended paramour look more and more uncomfortable until finally he sends Carson home, saying, “You’re just too femme.” Carson tries to butch it up a little, although it’s clearly against the grain, until a drag queen (Aja from Ru Paul’s Drag Race) gives him a boost of “be yourself” realness. Cute, but drags (if you’ll forgive the pun) in a couple of scenes. Worth seeing.

Don’t Fuck with England
Don’t Fuck with England • BAY AREA PREMIERE

The entire film is a narration (in voiceover with animated poetry on screen) of a scene that is a variation on the “English school master” fantasy motif, with an English S&M dom leading his American sub through some of the ways we get their language wrong. It’s cute enough for 2½ minutes, but any longer and I’d kick it to the kerb.

Bad Friend
Bad Friend
Two close friends work together, but then one of them “gets a big break” or “screws over a friend” (depending on your perspective). They have a big fight that is a bit annoying to watch, but very quickly the storytelling shifts to the song for which this is a music video by the band Cheese on Bread. It’s reasonably cute, with some truly fabulous costumes, but neither the song nor the video really grabbed me. Mildly recommended. Note: contains a brief scene of workplace sexual harassment.

The Fix
Steven, a fast-food worker, has an obsession that is intruding on his ability to concentrate on his work, so he seeks help in the form of an unorthodox cure. The results are corny and perhaps not quite cock-a-hoop, but I won’t put you in the dogbox if you feel a sudden craving for Der Wienerschnitzel. Recommended, easy on the mayo.

Routine
RoutineWORLD PREMIERE

Dwayne, a (fictional) stand-up comedian, does a routine about having recently come out and exploring dating. It’s amusing, but has more awkward pauses than I’d expect from a 6-minute comedy routine. Has some good moments, so I’ll give it a tepid recommendation.

Manivald

Manivald
Manivald is a red fox, turning 33, still living with his meddlesome mother. A laundry machine mishap needs the ministrations of a plumber, bringing us Toomas the wolf with six-pack abs. Toomas flirts shamelessly with both mother and son, creating confusion and consternation. This film is a co-production of filmmakers from Estonia and Croatia, with help from l’Office National du Film du Canada, which may explain the bizarre surrealism of parts of the storyline, but oddly, although the credits are in French, the dialogue is entirely in English with French subtitles. It is mildly diverting at times, but not engaging. Definitely the weakest film of this year’s FIBS.

High Rocks
Josh and Andy have been best friends literally their entire lives, but Josh still hasn’t come out to Andy. He plans to do it when they get together for a hike they’ve taken together countless times. Josh hadn’t figured on Kimmy, though, a stranger who gloms onto the pair for most of the afternoon. Josh grows antsy as he begins to wonder whether he’s going to have any one-on-one time with Andy to spill the beans. There is some toilet humor that just felt out of place, but on the whole the emotional interplay between the two old friends and a stranger rings true. Highly recommended, best in show.
