Pop Rox |
Jesse has planned an outing with her best friend Roxanne, working up the courage to tell her that she’s in love with her. Unfortunately, Rox has invited her new friend Evelyn, who has keys to the high school theater, throwing a monkey wrench into Jesse’s plan. We see everything from Jesse’s perspective, which makes Rox come across as a bit narcissistic. It’s pretty well done. Recommended.

Dick Sisters |
Dick meets up with his ex-girlfriends Tessa and Alli for a little 12-step clearing of the air, but things go wrong almost from the outset until an accident in the bathroom leaves Dick decidedly deceased. Tessa and Alli must figure out what to do about the dead body (shouldn’t we call the cops?) while also mending their friendship (strained when Alli began dating Dick). The first question fades into the background as the second takes center stage. Are they “Eskimo sisters” (women who have dated the same man), or is that phrase kind of racist? They conclude that they are Dick sisters, and that they should cut out the middleman in their little love triangle. Cute and well done, highly recommended.

Lesbehonest |
Blaire (Ivy Hong) has just broken up with her most recent girlfriend, so her gay roommate/best friend wants to help her get back in the dating game. They throw a party with lots of lesbians, about half of whom Blaire is trying to hook up with. She has to do a bit of social juggling to keep them separated at the party. It’s fairly standard comedy material for a story about a male protagonist, but a bit less banal in the lesbian realm.
The production values are mostly top-notch, with the possible exception of a couple of places where the passage of time is elided with a butt cut: blink, it’s suddenly some while later. Still, we only begin to get a glimpse of who Blaire really is, beyond a commitment-phobe whose best friend says he likes her best when she’s single and slutty. I hope that Blaire fleshes out her character as the series progresses. Very well done, highly recommended.

Lika Barn (Children Alike) |
Hanna is hosting a small celebratory dinner. Before the guests of honor turn up, her brother Johannes arrives with his new girlfriend Vilma. What none of them had pieced together, though, is that Hanna and Vilma already know each other, making things more than a little awkward. This short does a beautiful job of setting up the scene, with as much communicated in glances and facial expressions as in the dialogue. MUST SEE.
Ice Cold |
Katie is getting married to Paul today, in an enormous ceremony with purple calla lilies, doves, musicians, and a monumental case of cold feet. She barricades herself in the bathroom, where a couple of friends try to help her compose herself. Through flashbacks, we see some of the origins of Katie’s ambivalence. The copy I saw is marked as “in progress,” but there can’t be much in the way of finishing touches left to do. The performances by the main characters are nuanced, balanced with a bit of appropriately hamming it up by some of the supporting cast. The technical details are solid. MUST SEE.

Dyke Bars Never Last |
Local band Sapphic Lasers made a music video homage to dyke bars, with lots of footage of settings the audience will likely recognize. The song itself is a personal eulogy to dyke bars long gone and a paean to the ones that remain. Well made, highly recommended.
