Sweetheart Dancers |
Sean Snyder and Adrian Stevens, two young Ute men living in Mesquite, Nevada, each the child of two high school sweethearts, are inspired to enter a sweetheart dance competition at the upcoming Gathering of Nations pow wow, aiming for the top prize of $10,000. They create their own costumes and choreography, but are denied even the chance to compete because the rules only allow male-female couples. They fight on for the opportunity to be themselves in their community. The costumes and the dancing are beautiful even without the cultural context, but if you know anything about pow wow traditions, the story takes on a much deeper meaning. MUST SEE.

Bubble
Bubble |
Francis (Kaitlyn Fae), a teenage girl, lives with her parents in a house in Poway, California, in the summer of 2008, in the midst of the economic meltdown following the housing bubble of the mid-2000s. The family’s financial troubles leave Francis’s relationship with Megan in jeopardy, as she faces moving to Las Vegas without ever even having said the words “I love you.” Touching, but not much payoff for 18 minutes. Recommended. • IMDb •
The One You Never Forget |
Carey (London Curtis, left) is 14 years old, getting ready for his first school dance. His parents, after reminiscing about their first dance, of course, want to meet Carey’s date, but that would reveal that “her” name is Hunter. Beautifully made, MUST SEE.
Teddy Mate |
When a child gets a Teddy Mate, the teddy bear bonds with the child until one day it magically transforms into a human to be the child’s perfect lifelong wife (for a boy) or husband (for a girl). But what happens if something unexpected sends the transformation down a different path? Time to call tech support! It’s a clever premise, well crafted into a fun short film. Highly recommended.
• IMDb •Mack Wrestles |
Mack Beggs was a student wrestler in Euless, Texas, nestled next to DFW Airport. This short documentary, produced by ESPN Films, chronicles Mack’s struggle to be allowed to compete as a boy in the sport that has become his passion. You may have seen Mack on the news, but hearing the story in his own voice takes it to a deeper level of personal. It takes enormous personal courage to come out on social media, posting videos to document his transition despite the vitriolic responses from trolls, but it is an incalculable benefit for other transgender teens to see someone being unabashedly himself. Wrestling is near the very bottom of the list of sports I’m interested in watching, somewhere below tiddlywinks, badminton, and golf — but this is absolutely a MUST SEE film. • IMDb •
