رانی (Rani)
Rani, a young transwoman, ekes out a meager living selling children’s toys from a pushcart. One day she sees an abandoned infant and feels called to motherhood, but there are many obstacles. How can a poor woman who barely has a roof over her head, possibly raise a baby? Sensitive and touching without melodrama, highly recommended.

Desperately Seeking Shavers |
Documentary featuring several transgender individuals talking about their hair and particularly their feelings about hair styles and shaving. Personal grooming is (hopefully!) part of our everyday lives, but when it gets intertwined with gender identity, it can shed light on how we see ourselves. Highly recommended. • (not on IMDb) • trailer (vimeo) •
სოციუმის პატიმარი (Prisoner of Society) |
Adelina (ადელინა) is a transwoman, living in her parents’ home in Tbilisi, Georgia, a virtual prisoner. Her mother and especially her father are confused and concerned, for the family reputation as well as for Adelina’s own welfare. It’s an interesting glimpse into their lives, but unsatisfying for the sparse context given and the brief arc of Adelina’s story. There is footage of street protests and other outside events, but their relationship to the story is not clear (perhaps unless you are familiar with modern Georgian history). Recommended. • IMDb • Facebook @PrisonerOfSocietyFilm • trailer (vimeo) •

Here with You |
Not “boy meets girl” in the classic Hollywood formula, but transman meets transwoman. Produced by an all-trans/queer cast and crew. This sweet little vignette is well worth seeing, highly recommended.
“Homosafe” by the Homobiles |
Music video (fully open captioned for the hearing impaired) of the song “Homosafe” by local San Francisco band The Homobiles, fronted by local legend Lynnee Breedlove. The song has a good beat, a good message of resisting the violence against the LGBTIQ+ community, and you gotta love Lynnee Breedlove. Highly recommended.

Skin (Rhys Fehrenbacher) |
The central character, Charlie (played by Rhys Fehrenbacher from last year’s They), is a high school student, assigned female at birth but questioning their gender identity, interacting with their mother, their brother, and various classmates. Then they discover a magical cavern wherein they can try on a different identity (a new skin, quite literally) almost as easily as trying on a new sweater. It’s an interesting glimpse into the inner experience of not conforming to your assigned gender. Highly recommended. • IMDb •
