Two boys have just finished high school, not sure what the future holds, but one of them is likely to move away soon. They spend the summer hanging out and exploring the bond between them. The depth of the personal connection is mostly hinted at, but clearly there under the surface of their summer idyll. Highly recommended.

note about IMDb: the listing linked above seems to be about this film, but with some of the information taken from a 2020 feature-length documentary Incendios, about Bolivian firefighters. The 2021 short film is not about Bolivia or forest fires at all.
A woman comes into a café, apparently to meet up with some other woman, but instead she spends quite a lot of time with the waitress from the café, including playing confession in an empty church. It was a bit confusing, particularly whether they are ships passing in the night or starting something that might grow into more, but their immediate connection was palpable. Recommended.
Malcolm (Nicholas L. Ashe, pictured right) is the preacher’s son, volunteering as an usher for the Sunday service. Shamont (Elijah Boothe) is new to the church, also a volunteer. They feel an immediate connection, but the Baptist Church has strong views about such things. Will Malcolm and Lamont get the chance to explore their budding relationship, or will their religious beliefs shut it down before it really even starts? The action is gentle and understated, highlighting the feelings of the characters. Highly recommended.
Four friends go to Toronto Island for a beach day. They have snacks, wine, shrooms … and word of a dance party in a different part of the island. The group is divided about whether to go “shake your ass” or just chill in their quiet foursome. Ana, who organized (sore-ee, I mean organised) the get-together, feels uncomfortable going to such a cis-gay-dominated space, and the other three deal with their mixed feelings about the idea, about cis spaces, about public nudity, and about large parties. Cute story, with super cute stars (none of whom has an IMDb page!) but also an authentic realness, in part because the actors contributed to creating their characters from the beginning of the project. Highly recommended.

“A Summer Place”
dir. Alexandra Matheou, 2021, Cyprus/France, 20m., in English, Arabic and
Greek with full English subtitles 🙂
The main character, Tina (Mary Mina, pictured) goes out from her home in Cyprus, for a boat ride one afternoon. She seems to be leading up to suicide, but she is interrupted by someone in the water. They form a bond, not least because Tina injured herself in the rescue. They commiserate about the Russian oligarchs who are taking over the village. Recommended.
