Marc Huestis has been a fixture in San Francisco queer culture almost since the day he arrived as a fresh-faced theatre twink back in the 1970s. He performed on stage, made films, and helped organize the very first gay film festival that evolved into the Frameline we know and love today.
This documentary tracks many bits of his personal history and evolution, including the highs and lows. (Of course, an exhaustive history would be far beyond the bounds of a one-hour documentary.) We see samples from his stage work, his films, the many special events he has hosted at the Castro Theatre with major stars as his guests, and his political activism (including clashes with Harvey Milk), plus his personal struggles with HIV, substance abuse, and other issues.
Queer San Franciscans are the core audience for this documentary, but it will also speak to anyone who stands up and stands out with a strong, passionate artistic and/or political vision. Highly recommended.
