Winner: best documentary feature (Frameline47 jury award)
Nikki Giovanni |
Poet and renowned Afro-futurist Nikki Giovanni says that space travel is in a Black woman’s blood, due to the ability to adapt to alien environments and survive dangerous journeys. It’s a bit counterintuitive at first, but the explanation makes sense and also gives you a glimpse into how Giovanni thinks: “outside the box” and then some. Going to Mars shows clips of Giovanni reading some of her work and making other public appearances, and also gives us some up close and personal time with the artist and activist. It’s a documentary worthy of its subject: thought-provoking, illuminating, and bold. Definitely a MUST SEE.
