Digital Curanderas |
The main character, a queer, non-binary Latinx Indigenous curandera (folk healer) (River Gallo, pictured right), has finally decided to join most of their family and friends in uploading their consciousness to Digisphere, an eternal virtual life system. The hitch: in order to upload, you have to have someone sign as “next of kin” to take care of what remains of your mortal self. The only candidate is a somewhat estranged friend who is militantly anti-Digisphere, but in return he wants a limpia, a spiritual cleansing.
The concept of the Digisphere is similar to a couple of current mainstream works, but Digital Curanderas takes a look from a fresh cultural angle at the intersection of multiple marginalized communities. It’s interesting and worth seeing, highly recommended.
The star, River Gallo, has been in a couple of other Frameline films, including this year’s Every Body (not reviewed) and 2019’s Ponyboi (also not reviewed, but now available for streaming!). I’ll try to post my review of Ponyboi as soon as I’m done with Frameline47; I’m hoping I also get a second chance to see Every Body.
Femme Rage, dir. Sarah Taborga & Aïma Paule, 2023, USA, 3 min., fully open captioned, with Audio Description available 💖
screened in theater with Clashing Differences (not reviewed)

Femme Rage |
A group of QTBIPOC Femmes, across the gender spectrum, rally to unleash their rage about living, surviving, and thriving within a cishetero-capitalist-white supremacist patriarchy. It’s a powerful expression of anger and resolve, definitely a MUST SEE.
The Girl That Got Away, dir. Lauren Veen & Ephi Stempler, 2023, USA, 14 min. 💖
The Girl That Got Away |
A 64-year-old HIV+ Mexican American actor living in San Francisco wrestles with the decision whether to continue playing cis-male roles, and whether to come out to family a second time, after finally accepting that she identifies as female. Includes scenes of the Trans March in Dolores Park. A testament to the power of coming out and the pain of staying in the closet. MUST SEE.
(in)convenience, dir. Alexandra Greenspan, 2023, USA, 12 min. 👏
(in)convenience |
Kirby is a transman, recently started on T. He goes down to the corner store to buy some tampons. The clerk, Phoebe, naturally assumes he’s buying them for his girlfriend, but they begin flirting with one another. Kirby’s flatmate pushes him to actually ask her out, but, of course, that’s a little bit complicated. It’s a cute story, well executed, highly recommended.
Interdimensional Pizza Portal, dir. Aron Kantor, 2023, USA, 5 min. 👍
Pizza Portal |
Grover uses some form of witchcraft to open a portal to another dimension. To test it, he asks for a slice of pizza, which magically appears. But where did it come from? What are the ripple effects of opening this portal? His friend Aliee is quite concerned, which proves prescient.
It’s a cute bit of fluff, though with not that much queer content. Recommended.

No More Longing (Chega de saudade), dir. Connor Lee O’Keefe, 2023, USA, 16 min., in English w/ Portuguese subtitles and in Portuguese w/ English subtitles 👏
No More Longing |
Jaime Jobim, a transmasculine bossa nova musician, moved from Brazil to California seven years ago to pursue his love of music. Four years ago, he began his transition. Now he searches for his new (metaphorical) voice, as his (literal) voice has changed in the interim. No More Longing is a nice window into the life of an interesting artist following his dream. Highly recommended.
Note regarding subtitles: Most of the film’s dialogue is in English, with Portuguese subtitles; the portions that are in Portuguese have English subtitles. Thus, speakers of either language can follow along, but if you’re relying on the subtitles, you will miss a good bit unless you know both languages.

Sean Dorsey Dance: Dreaming Trans and Queer Futures, dir. Lindsay Gauthier, 2022, USA, 9 min., closed captioned 💖
Sean Dorsey Dance |
Like many trans artists, Sean Dorsey came to San Francisco to be his authentic self and pursue his art. When he got here, though, he found plenty of trans artists, but no one else doing the sort of modern dance he wanted, so he set out to create the opportunity he sought and to spread the vibrant joy expressed by his “I ❤️ Being Trans” t-shirt. The dance work, centering trans, gender-nonconforming, and queer people, is a pleasure to see, with an uplifting, inclusive spirit. Definitely a MUST SEE — watch it at the link below, courtesy of KQED!
Take Me There, dir. Elliot Slade, 2023, USA, 21 min. 💖 • 🌐 World première
Take Me There |
An evening of dating and conversation in San Francisco, with some real emotional vulnerability and joie de vivre as human beings with their individual stories intersect. It’s beautiful, sweet, and real. MUST SEE.
