Gena Marvin is a Russian performance artist, among other things. She roams around Moscow in wild costumes, going grocery shopping, riding the subway, and protesting the then-imminent full-scale invasion of Ukraine. She deals with police (many of whom have ОМОН emblazoned on their jackets, but that has nothing to do with HOMO) and administrators at her school, while managing a complicated relationship with her grandparents back in Magadan (on the distant east coast of Russia). We witness her very real struggles, including wrestling with the question of whether she can safely live in Russia. It’s a powerful testament to a figure who defiantly stands up and stands out against the backdrop of an increasingly conformist, authoritarian society. Must see.
