Okay, first, a quick cheatsheet to keep track of the characters (you may need this if you’re watching the movie stoned).
- Ivan Leung (pictured, center) plays Daniel/Danny (not to be confused with “Other Dan”), who plays Gregg, who plays Jasper, who is making a movie with Jake
- Harrison Xu (pictured, far left) plays Ryan, who plays Tim, who plays Jake, who is making a movie with Jasper
Ryan and Danny have been living in Los Angeles, trying to make it as actors, but Ryan is moving to Canada with his girlfriend. On their last weekend together, they decide to make a movie, but, with some help from more than a bit of cannabis, the movie dives to ever deeper levels of “meta.” The lines between the lives of the actors, the lives of the characters, and the lives of the characters’ characters, blur mercilessly, but in the mix, we get to see some of what makes all six of the two characters tick.
This film is about as meta as meta can meta, and very much a solid stoner buddy comedy, but with some genuine emotional depth in each layer of this Russian nesting doll of a story. I definitely want to see it again “cone sold stober,” but it’s a MUST SEE either way.
