Les tortues (Turtles) |
Thom and Henri, both in their 60s, are a married couple living in Brussels, Belgium, with their pet turtles Topsy and Turvy. Henri has just retired from the police force, but the sudden shift in his life brings to the surface many underlying stresses and strains in their relationship. The two begin one-upping each other in finding new ways to irritate the other. Unfortunately, while Thom is portrayed in an occasionally somewhat sympathetic light, Henri is not, with only a glimmer of redemption at the end. Their fighting was unpleasant to watch, with nothing to draw the viewer into the story. There were some good moments, but my overall reaction was, “Meh,” so I give it a thoroughly tepid “recommended,” but that’s a step up from my reaction to Lambert’s previous film
Hors les murs (Beyond the Walls) 👎😑 (
Frameline37, 2013).
