Deeper Love: The Story of Miss Peppermint |
Miss Peppermint was the first openly trans contestant on Ru Paul’s Drag Race (though certainly not the last). Filmmaker Oriel Pe’er followed her around for nine years, well before and well after Drag Race. We get to see Peppermint’s personal and professional evolution, the struggle to get on Drag Race, the show and its aftermath, and what has come since. Miss Peppermint was all set for a breakout year in 2020, but something else decided to break out instead. It took a while for all of us to bounce back to something approaching normal, but Peppermint is going strong. Now the MAGAts have drag queens and trans people squarely in their sights, and Miss Peppermint is fighting on, using her platform (spike heels, but a platform to speak out) to work for liberation and justice.
It’s an inspiring film, but also plenty of fun to watch, with some moments of real humanity between the performances. Peppermint is a force to be reckoned with, and A Deeper Love does a good job of bringing her to the big screen. Definitely a must see.
