Lukas is struggling to make it as an actor in London, but we meet him standing on a bridge, contemplating jumping into the Thames. He came from Germany to put some distance to his family, but he’s not getting roles and his rent is overdue. Oliver is from a rich family, but has a failing business weighing him down. He’s very much a spoiled brat at first, but eventually, even though Oliver is mostly interested in women and Lukas is openly gay, they strike up a conversation and carry it all around London until morning. The dialogue is tight and snappy, but seldom feels forced or even awkward, as these two fresh acquaintances open up to one another and confront their own issues, trying to find meaning in their lives.
It’s a wandering journey, serving mostly to frame the conversation, but it is pretty solidly interesting throughout, and sometimes thought provoking. Highly recommended.
One surprise in the cast who wasn’t mentioned in the Frameline blurb: look for David Bradley (Argus Filch from the H*rry P*tter films) as the owner of one of the bars they pass through.
