Filmmaker Samuael Topiary was working at the Oakland Museum of California, helping to prepare an exhibit called “Queer California: Untold Stories,” for which she was tasked to find the 1977 documentary In the Best Interests of the Children (showing after the in-person screening of Lesbian Custody, and also available separately in the Digital Screening Room). She was able to dig up a copy, and made contact with one of the filmmakers and one of the children from the film. They talked about what it was like to be a lesbian parent in the 1970s, with homophobic judges taking away custody solely on the basis of sexual orientation, and what it was like to make the film. That narrative is intertwined with several clips from In the Best Interests of the Children, bringing the story into the 21st century.
It’s a moving reconnection to an important part of our history. Definitely a must see for all audiences. Lesbian parents may especially appreciate it, but it really is a film for everyone.
