Opera has a long history of blurring gender boundaries. In the early days, the female roles were played by castrati, young men who were castrated to preserve their higher vocal range. Thankfully, that barbaric process is no longer extant, and women are allowed to play the female roles. But there is also a more recent history of “pants roles,” male roles (usually young men) played by women. There’s more, and an ever-evolving relationship between voice, character, and gender.
Singers Breanna Sinclairé, Lucas Bouk, and Katherine Goforth, along with musicologist Dr. Naomi André, explore the interaction of their own gender identities and the traditional and contemporary expectations of the opera world.
It’s highly recommended for everyone, but definitely a must see for music students and opera fans.
