The Nature of Invisible Things (A natureza das coisas invisíveis) is the story of two families whose lives intersect when Sofia (in the red top) brings her great grandmother into the hospital where Glória’s mother works, with Glória tagging along so as not to be left at home alone. The two girls become instant besties. We get well into the stories of the two girls and their families before we get the first hint of why this film belongs in an LGBTQ festival.
It’s a mark of considerable progress that we can now have movies in which a character’s gender and/or sexuality is not the pivotal plot point, but just one of the interesting aspects of the person. We already care about the character before a little bit more information comes along about them. The way that the LGBTQ content is woven into the fabric of this story makes this a must see, as well as a standout first narrative feature by a promising director.
