Roman (Dylan O’Brien, pictured left) is grieving the death of his identical twin brother Rocky. He goes to a support group, where he meets Dennis (filmmaker James Sweeney, right). They form a quirky relationship, even though Roman is straight and Dennis is gay. Roman is, in his own words, “not the brightest tool in the shed,” but he’s affable, at least until his temper explodes. Dennis is witty and sarcastic, seemingly compulsively so. As they get deeper, we see more of the dark side of this dark comedy. Those metaphorical dark corners contain some rich drama with complex feelings attached, giving the film some emotional depth and staying power, although the comedy resurfaces from time to time.
It’s funny, it’s entertaining, it brings you along happily for the ride, even a few moments that are hard to watch. Dylan O’Brien has done an excellent job of shedding the typecast of the hunky twink from films like The Maze Runner, going out of his way to support original stories by independent filmmakers, and the effort has paid off handsomely (and yes, Dylan is still very handsome!). It’s a must see — and you’ll get the chance this fall in its theatrical release!
