Valencia

Valencia was a community project, essentially about a dozen short films, each with its own director, cast, and style, each taking a chapter of Michelle Tea’s memoir of the lesbian punk scene in 1990s San Francisco. The effect is something of a stream-of-consciousness mishmash, with a half dozen or more very different actors playing the same role. I haven’t read the memoir, so I found it a bit hard to track, and not quite worth the effort.

It’s not a bad film, and if you’re a Michelle Tea fan, you’ll probably find yourself saying, “Oh yeah, I recognize this scene! It’s one of my favorites.” Of course, if you’re a big Michelle Tea fan, the walking tour with Michelle already sold you, and the film is just the bow on the present. But if you’re new to Michelle Tea, you may find your mind wandering. So, it’s definitely a must see for Michelle Tea groupies, but more of a “meh” more generally.
