WICKET |
Right here in San Francisco, one of the pioneers of breakdancing got his start, first with the SF Renegade Rockers, then learning the east coast style (less about “tricks” like head spins, more about footwork and precision) with Flomaster from Rock Steady, Wicket rose to the top of breakdancing, but all that while he was deep inside the closet. He finally came out just a few years ago, and is back out in the public, promoting breakdancing and his own music while also being his authentic self. Following his example, many other Bboys and Bgirls have since come out.
Lily Plotkin and her film crew followed Wicket for three years, including personal and professional moments, showing off the scar tissue in the form of a large bump on top of his head from doing so many spins, meeting the man he settled down with, talking to many breakdancing luminaries, and entering an over-40 break dancing competition.
The first time I saw break dancing was in the early 1980s, what I think was an actual turf battle, a dance-off in lieu of a fistfight (or worse), outside a shopping mall in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, just outside Trenton. But beyond that, everything I knew about break dancing would almost fill a sentence fragment. The documentary WICKET gives an introduction to the art/sport (it really is both) of break dancing, as well as a deep dive into the individual Bboy Wicket. The individual and the film are both captivating and well worth your time. It’s a must see, especially if you know next to nothing about break dancing.
