All Over the Guy

Frameline blurb: Dan Bucatinsky of The Comeback and Hacks adapted his own stage play about a heterosexual couple into a gay rom-com for the big screen — which served as the Closing Night film at Frameline25. A bubbly and hysterical gay alternative to When Harry Met Sally…, All Over the Guy follows two seemingly incompatible gay men (played by Bucatinsky and Richard Ruccolo), set up on a blind date by their mutual straight friends (Sasha Alexander and Adam Goldberg). But against all odds, suave, handsome schoolteacher Tom and nerdy but cute Eli find common romantic ground in — what else — their shared love of movies.

Featuring a rich ensemble cast which includes Christina Ricci, Andrea Martin, Doris Roberts, Joanna Kerns, and Bucantinsky’s longtime creative partner and friend Lisa Kudrow in a hilarious cameo, All Over the Guy provides the sort of trauma-free, lighthearted gay diversion that seems to be in short supply 25 years later… Let's be honest, couldn’t we all use some of that right about now?

My take: Just one extra dash of spice to the nostalgia of a light-hearted comedy: less than three months later, the world changed on 9/11.

I was there for the 2001 Frameline screening, although I don’t remember it all that clearly, so I was glad for the opportunity to see it again at the Castro Theatre with a Frameline audience. Certainly the audience received it quite enthusiastically, but I did find the main character irritating for his high-strung nature. The phrase “Switch to decaf!” definitely comes to mind, although I’m not sure that would help, since much of his anxiety is structural in his life. At least high-strung Angelenos are slightly less annoying than high-strung New Yorkers. In any case, there are certainly some good laughs, and wonderful performances by the supporting cast. Definitely highly recommended, so take a look at the preview.
