The Dads

Frameline blurb: Inspired by the Emmy Award-winning short documentary of the same name (Netflix, 2023), The Dads chronicles fathers of trans and nonbinary children as they are forced to choose between country and family when a new right-wing administration and conservative Supreme Court take hold in the United States.

Filmed over the course of a year spanning retreats in rural Maine and Minnesota, protests, family milestones, a pivotal U.S. Supreme Court decision, and the collapse of gender-affirming care for youth, The Dads captures this national reckoning with remarkable intimacy through vérité footage and interviews with the film’s main protagonists. This is fatherhood as an act of radical resistance.

My take: In a sane world, it should be no big deal to say “father supports his child,” but sadly, we do not live in a sane world. With the hard turn to the transphobic lunatic right-wing in the United States, for a father to stand up publicly in support of his trans child is almost as courageous as that child standing up for who they are. Because of the unique challenges faced by fathers of trans and non-binary children, some of them started a support group, and Zoom calls eventually morphed into in-person gatherings.

The Dads is a tribute to a group of fathers who have unequivocally placed the well-being of their children above societal prejudices, and in some cases their own prejudices, to stand firmly for trans rights. It’s a must see for everyone, even more so for trans/non-binary folks and anyone with a trans/n.b. person in your family.
