All Kinds of Love

All Kinds of Love, dir. David Lewis, 2022, USA, 75m. 👍

On the very day the Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex marriage was handed down, Max’s husband Josh announces that he wants to end their 7 years of “marriage.” Max struggles to start over, his efforts complicated by the fact that he is living in a bungalow owned by Josh, who is trying to win Max back, all while Max is also dealing with his parents’ unconventional “throuple” relationship. Then, through an apparently unintentional mix-up, Josh rents out the bungalow to a new tenant, Conrad, a much younger man who is also struggling to find his footing in the world of romance. The basic plot direction is pretty clearly telegraphed, but with some entertaining diversions along the way.

All Kinds of Love was made on a shoestring budget, and occasionally it shows, particularly in the sometimes plodding pace of the story (a knock I also had against Lewis’ previous works, particularly Longhorns and Rock Haven). I walked out of Lewis’ 2009 film Redwoods, but I recommended 2012’s The Wise Kids, so Lewis does seem to be getting better. Worth seeing, and not just for the full frontal nudity; recommended.
