World premiere
Karim and his family immigrated from Morocco to the Netherlands. The family stubbornly cling to tradition, but Karim himself can no longer hide the fact that he is a gay man. He decides to confront his parents, who are utterly unwilling to hear his truth, so he literally barricades himself in their closet until they agree to talk about it. In the mean time, he has imaginary conversations with various people, including his 10-year-old self, and lengthy flashbacks, as hours drag into days, locked in a closet barely larger than Harry Potter’s room under the stairs.
Frameline billed El Houb as a dark comedy, or perhaps a dramedy, but that’s more than a stretch. It’s a heavy drama with only a few bits of comedy sprinkled sparingly into the story. Taken for what it is, it’s well worth seeing, a glimpse into a culture we don’t often see in films, but don’t expect a comedy.
Theatrical release in the Netherlands planned for October 2022, with worldwide distribution pending.
