Naomi (pictured, right) collects ancient pre-historic artifacts from the mid- to late 20th century, things like VHS tapes, vinyl albums, and analogue audio cassette recorders. He meets Maki, a much more free-spirited young man, who cajoles him into helping with a unique project: Maki’s adopted “grandmother” Midori is blind and in the hospital, so Maki and Naomi make a series of audio cassettes pretending that Maki has gone on a worldwide adventure, visiting places that Midori dreamed of but never visited. Naomi and Maki are immediately drawn to one another, but feel compelled to hide behind first the travelogue project and then rough horseplay and wrestling, rather than deal openly with their feelings for one another. Will they escape their upbringing and live happily ever after, or will they remain trapped in a dreary, emotionally repressed routine? Recommended.
