Fábio is a gay man living in Brazil, which was especially hard hit by Covid, in part due to the malign neglect of its Trumpian president Jair Bolsonaro. Fábio has been in a long-distance relationship with a man he hasn’t seen except on Zoom in over 10 months, and the connection is beginning to fray, both the literal Internet connection on the video call and the interpersonal bond. Fábio sets out to get laid, but he insists on strict Covid precautions, the stuff of a dysto­pian science fiction movie. He’s pushed away most of the real people in his life, mostly over various lapses in Covid safety, so he’s left with Grindr.
Seguindo is billed as a sexy comedy, but it falls short on both counts. The obsessive Covid safety measures give much of the sex a sense of profound inhibition to the point of clinical detachment, and the main character has clearly lost his sense of humor entirely. He succeeds in convey­ing the bleak reality of his isolation and fear, but little else. Disappointing.
