wooden sign at the beach: Big Sur Gay Porn
Big Sur Gay Porn
Filmmaker Tom DeSimone made several gay and straight porn films, including Sur, before transitioning to more conventional filmmaking. DeSimone was particularly fond of the beach at Big Sur as a location for filming. Documentarian Ryan A. White shows DeSimone a copy of Sur, a film that had been lost to time but was rediscovered and digitized. DeSimone’s summary: Don’t see this film [the original Sur]! Big Sur Gay Porn was mildly interesting, worth seeing for historical perspective.

older man with towels folded into a swan
Cutest and Funniest

An older man works as a janitor in a hotel and records audio of guests having sex to play back for a friend while they have sex. It started off kind of cute and funny, but veered off into inexplicably weird and creepy. Not recommended.

the word IMPÉRIO over a blurry picture of 3 naked men
Império
Three men stand naked in profile, visible from mid-thigh to lower abdomen, their penises bobbing up and down (no hands), while piano music, nature sounds, and what sounds like it might be a power saw occupy the background. The Frameline program says, “The crown jewels of the empire rise and fall.” Let’s hope not. Completely gratuitous. Not recommended.

How to Carry Water, dir. Sasha Wortzel, 2023, USA, 15 min. 👏

3 large women in swimsuits in a natural pond
How to Carry Water
This short film is a portrait of Shoog McDaniel, a self-described fat, gay, disabled photographer in northern Florida, an area with lots of natural springs. She finds that swimming liberates her from carrying the weight of her body, and she photographs other plus-size women in the same spirit of liberation, celebrating being sensual and sexual and beautiful. Highly recommended, especially if you find it challenging to see a large person (yourself or someone else) in that kind of a positive light.

Note: there is a strobing effect at around 10 to 12 minutes that may bother some viewers.

Ob Scene
Ob scena (Ob Scene), dir. Paloma Orlandini Castro, 2021, Argentina, 18 min., in Spanish with subtitles 👎 • 🇺🇸 U.S. première

A woman reminisces about her childhood, including having surgery on her private parts, and then embarks on a clinical deconstruction of erotic images and pornography. I found it neither particularly illuminating nor particularly erotic. Not recommended.

actors and crew on a set of an office meeting
The Script
The Script is a docu-drama about the process of getting gender-affirming care in the U.S. medical system. It talks about the process so many trans individuals have had to go through of trying to shape their experiences to fit their therapists’ preconceived ideas of their “disorder” in order to check the right boxes. Excellent, definitely a MUST SEE.

two men kiss
犬漏 (Solid)
Two Japanese men are having sex right as a series of earthquakes strike. Their phones helpfully chime a warning notification just after each tremor starts, but just as they go back at it, another aftershock strikes. They reminisce about the big earthquake a few years ago. Cute, amusing, recommended.

multiple overlapping line drawings in a jumble
Y
Two women talk about lines while line drawings of them pleasure themselves, pleasure each other, and generally move around. The artist deconstructs her relationship with an ex. The images are on a white backdrop, and the subtitles are in white with the thinnest possible black outline, making them sometimes quite difficult to read. It wasn’t horrible, just “meh.”
