Kids will make fun of almost any name, but some names just leap out in that regard. This film is a well-done exploration of the impact of having a name that kids incessantly ridicule. Highly recommended.

Nice to See You by Caitlin Barlow, 2024 USA, 4 min. π«€
⚠️Content Warning: Unwanted attention
Bio: Caitlin Barlow is a Chicago based filmmaker with interest in cinematography and editing.
This one really didn’t make sense to me at all. We start with a repetitive series of scenes in the cafΓ©, with the main character taking orders, wiping down tables, and other ordinary tasks. Then there is a “blink and you miss it” encounter outside the cafΓ©, lacking any context. If I hadn’t read the program description, I wouldn’t have known that it was a walk home, much less an uncomfortable one. I’ll give this one a “recommended, I guess.”

Bio: Freddie is a choreographer and filmmaker interested in describing the hard to express onscreen or onstage.
This one left me saying, “Huh??” I can’t tell you what happened or what this film was about, because I was honestly left wondering. If I get the chance, maybe it will make more sense seeing it a second time, but I couldn’t find it on YouTube or Vimeo. Another “recommended, I guess.”

Lucid |
A Vietnamese woman’s heartfelt revelation ebbs into a chilling ordeal.
⚠️Content Warning: Grief, Emotional pain
Bio: Tierra Frost is a Black queer female writer-director from Seattle, Washington.
At the heart of the story is a psychedelic mushroom trip, but is the trip itself even real? On the trip, the main character is talking with someone, struggling to tell her something important. There is plenty of humor with some poignant moments. Highly recommended.

Handle with Care by Kelsey Dang, 2024 USA, 4 min., no dialogue π
⚠️Content Warning: Emotional pain
Bio: Kelsey is a Bay Area based artist and creative.
I never got any sense of the context of what was going into the box or why it occasionally came back out again, so it really didn’t make sense to me. Another “recommended, I guess.”

F**ked by Sara Harrak, 2023 United Kingdom, 6 min. π

A married thirty-something lesbian couple have decided to open up their relationship, but one of them is shocked to hear how the other one wants to explore that. It’s funny, particularly the interaction with other shoppers in the small grocery store where the discussion takes place, but also thought-provoking. MUST SEE.

Miguel and Lu flirt over washing clothes, something to the effect of “I’ll wash your clothes. Go ahead and take them off.” [not a quote] It’s sexy and very much genderqueer-affirming. MUST SEE.
