Sandbag Dam (Zečji nasip) |
Marko (Lav Novosel, pictured left) and Slaven (Andrija Žunac, right) had a secret teenage romance until their parents found out and Slaven’s father threw him out. Marko has mapped out a life within the expectations of the small town, with a career and a girlfriend and his family nearby, with a promising future as the regional arm wrestling champion (evidently a much bigger deal there than here).
Years later, Slaven is in town for his father’s funeral, jeopardizing Marko’s plans. The action coincides with preparations for a flood on the river through town (hence the English title, although the Croatian title literally translates as “Rabbit Mound”), but Slaven’s return portends a river of buried feelings that could flood Marko’s life, forcing him to choose between family expectations and living his own life.
It’s well done, with heartfelt performances and an engaging story. It’s not as high caliber as the other Croatian entry in this year’s Frameline (Beautiful Evening, Beautiful Day), but also not nearly as depressing. Highly recommended.
