Note: the short film Like What Would Sorrow Look (愁何狀) precedes the in-person screening, but is not available in the Digital Screening Room and was not available for advance review.

Pua is a young man, fresh out of prison. He wants to help support his mother, but the only way he knows to do that is to go back to the organized crime that sent him to prison in the first place. Pua’s mother read his fortune when he was a child, telling him that he would have the fate of a ganster, although she later adds that he need not do gangster deeds. In prison, he was protected by Mi-Ji, although that protection came with a price. When Mi-Ji gets out of prison just days after Pua, Pua wants to rekindle their relationship, but Mi-Ji resists at first.

The character of Pua didn’t make sense to me, at turns obstinate and passively helpless. I never really felt like I got inside the character. Interesting but not compelling. Recommended.
