Some Nights I Feel Like Walking

Four street hustlers, plus a newbie with a murky past, turn tricks in Manila to make ends meet, hoping to escape that life for something better. One night, one of them dies of a drug overdose; his dying wish is to be returned to his home town in the provinces. The four remaining boys trek off to the hinterlands with their dead friend. Initial mistrust gradually gives way to a degree of understanding. When they arrive in the provinces, the film takes on a fairytale quality, with the explicit dream sequence barely distinguishable from what seems to be real life.

It’s an interesting story about people who happen to be rent boys, but is more about their connections as human beings than about what they do to get by. There’s no on-screen sex, but we do get to see some shirtless twinks, ranging from waifish to muscular. I felt like I was missing some of the context, since the Manila rent boy scene (and indeed the Philippines more broadly) is relatively unfamiliar territory, but the connections between the characters is palpable. Highly recommended.
