“In an exploration of self-discovery, Victoria, Athena and Aamina navigate womanhood through loss and introspection, weaving past regrets and future aspirations in a poetic documentation of embracing true selves.”
The filmmaker, Victoria Verseau, returns to the hotel and clinic in Thailand where she had gender-affirming surgery, along with two trans women beginning the transition process, as Victoria remembers Meril, a trans woman from Paris who was in Thailand for her surgery at the same time as Victoria, making them close friends. Meril completed suicide a few years ago, leaving Victoria to contemplate loss, regrets, pain, doubt, and grief, and to try to find hope for the future.
Trans Memoria is a deeply personal journey, but almost anyone can find resonances with your own life or the lives of friends and family, and take inspiration from the willingness to shine a light into some of the darker moments of life, to spend time with the twin questions How did I get here? and Where do I go from here? It’s a beautiful and emotive film, definitely a must see.
