Frameline blurb: Meet Mickey Squires, legendary porn star and notorious alter ego to Richard Bernstein. Diving into the colorful history of gay adult cinema, this intimate documentary portrait from directing duo Ryan A. White and A.P. Pickle (Raw! Uncut! Video!, Frameline45; π Big Sur Gay Porn, Frameline47) traces Richard’s evolution from a lanky high school drama nerd to fantasy dream daddy Mickey, charting the joys and tribulations along the way.
As Bernstein was catapulted into porn stardom, he had to navigate the spotlight as well as the dark shadow it cast. Grappling with the harsh dichotomy of his personas, Bernstein was confronted with isolation, the death of his partner, drug addiction, and HIV. Lovingly shot in gorgeous black and white 16mm with a wealth of beautiful archival footage and candid interviews, Mickey & Richard is a remarkably tender study of the blurring of boundaries between Richard, the person, and Mickey, the sex icon… and the unlikely marriage between the two halves.
My take: Mickey & Richard is a rare glimpse into the internal world of a porn star, how he got into the business, how he lasted more than two decades as a star — even starting in his 30s!, and how his life has evolved post-porn. Richard (his real name) opens up remarkably about the highs and lows of his life, from childhood to porn to what came after and finally to senior citizen status. There are, of course, images from Mickey’s work (his porn name), so this film is definitely “adults only,” but definitely highly recommended, and a must see if you were ever a fan of Mickey Squires, Honcho, Falcon Video, or similar publications.

Frameline blurb: In an intimate and provocative journey, Vibrations is a documentary-essay that explores the filmmaker’s complex relationship with explicit imagery and his own sexuality. Born into a Catholic family and struggling to put his homosexuality into words, the director finds in pornography a space for self-exploration and acceptance. The film dives into the nuances of alternative pornography, challenging stigmas and revealing how desire, identity, and the politics of the body intertwine both on screen and in life. A work that pulses between the personal and the universal, Vibrations challenges perceptions and invites a rediscovery of pleasure and freedom through the image.
My take: Interesting, but not compelling. Recommended.
