😁 All You Can Eat, dir. Michael Brynntrup, 1994, Germany, 5 min., in German and English

All You Can Eat

Frameline blurb: Safe sex in the 1970s. A classic from legendary gay experimental filmmaker  Michael Brynntrup.

A series of clips from gay porn films of the 1970s, cropped so you mostly see the facial expressions without the “action” shots. There are quite a few twinks, but also several slightly older men with more of a “clone” aesthetic.

If this era was your introduction to gay porn, I think you’ll enjoy this nostalgic look back. Highly recommended.

Forever Bottom!, dir. Nguyen Tan Hoang, 1999, USA, 4 min.
(not available for advance review)

Forever Bottom!

Frameline blurb: In a “psuedo-instructional” videotape, director Nguyen Tan Hoang embraces the desires of full, unrepentant bottomhood, showing the independence and gratification of being the bottom. Forever Bottom! is a humorous take on the insatiable appetite of an Asian male bottom, posing a challenge and an invitation — aggressive, unapologetic, and ubiquitous — without revealing too much!

🙂 Ifé, dir. H. Lenn Keller, 1993, USA, 5 min.

Ifé

Frameline blurb: Cruising the streets of San Francisco in her vintage Buick, a charming Black French lesbian shares her butch Casanova philosophy, “You can never experience too many women.” An irresistible debut short from the late photographer, filmmaker, and co-founder of the Bay Area Lesbian Archives, H. Lenn Keller. Newly restored by UCLA Film & Television Archive in collaboration with Frameline.

A French lesbian (almost certainly an American native speaker of English portraying someone from France) drives around, reminiscing about women she’s been with. No sexually explicit images. Interesting, worth seeing as a time capsule. (Did you know that cigarette lighters in cars were once used not only for powering random 12V devices, but also for lighting cigarettes??) Recommended.

Law & Order: GMHC

Frameline blurb: In this historically significant and genuinely educational hardcore gay roleplay and bondage safe sex PSA, a white cop gets fucked and fisted by a Black construction worker. Produced by Gregg Bordowitz and Jean Carlomusto for Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC) — one of the hottest safe sex PSAs of the genre.

😐 Matzo Maidels, dir. Jenni Olson, Monica Nolan, & Julie Dorf, 2003, USA, 5 min.

Matzo Maidels

Frameline blurb: Brooklyn Bloomberg and friends do some steamy kibbitzing in this fascinating piece of Yiddish-keit, circa 1923. Matzo Maidels combines rare 16mm archival lesbian porn footage overlaid with an outrageous Jewish porno voiceover — sprinkled with colloquial Yiddishisms.

I’m quite skeptical that the silent black-and-white lesbian porn clips are actually more than a century old, but some of the footage is at least several decades old. Unfortunately, the modern voiceover narration is just irritating and really adds nothing to the experience. Recommended for historical interest, but I would suggest muting it if you can.

😁 Phineas Slipped, dir. Cary Cronenwett, 2003, USA, 15 min.

Phineas Slipped

Frameline blurb: Restless schoolboys daydream in Super 8 in this homoerotic free-for-all where trans-masculine and gender nonconforming actors dominate.

The actors are clearly legal adults, so I take it that the characters are those mythical beasts, 18-year-old high school students, at least where that’s an issue. The simulated sex is pretty graphic, and some of it is coercive (schoolboy bullying and the like). If any of those make you squeamish, you should give this one a miss. But if you’re okay with that setup, it’s a fun daydream put on film. Highly recommended, with caveats.

😁 Stafford’s Story, dir. Susan Muska, 1992, USA, 3 min.

Stafford’s Story

Frameline blurb: In this early '90s transmasc/butch classic, the one and only Stafford recounts a memorable encounter at a lesbian sex club. Digital restoration by UCLA Film & Television Archive.

Just a direct telling of one evening’s sexual adventures. Engaging, worth seeing, highly recommended.

😁 Who’s the Top?, dir. Jennie Livingston, 2005, USA, 23 min.

Who’s the Top?

Frameline blurb: Venturing forth to explore her BDSM desires, Alixe is torn between her loving relationship with her girlfriend and her ambition to be an edgy artist in this wry, rarely-seen musical-comedy fantasia from Paris Is Burning director Jennie Livingston, starring Steve Buscemi.

Interesting and a little demented (in a good way). The high-brow philosophy (and dualistic conundrums) don’t get in the way of the story of a woman going after what she wants. And hey, wait a minute, is that Steve Buscemi?? (Yes, although hardly more than a parting glance.) Highly recommended.
