Ramin (or Ramón, as one of the other characters calls him; on the left in the photo) fled persecution in Iran and somehow finds himself in Veracruz, Mexico, a port city in what is currently one of the more dangerous parts of the country. He longs to be, if not back in Iran, at least closer to that part of the world. He speaks only a few words of Spanish, and has halting conversations with locals who speak perhaps even less English. His days are filled with physical labor (the only jobs he can get) punctuated with hanging out with a couple of buddies and trying to find a ship that might take him to Europe, with occasional video chats with someone back home. It’s a bleak existence filled with uncertainty and with no clear pathway to something better, but hope keeps him plodding through it. The narrative neither dwells on nor glosses over the challenges in Ramin’s life, offering no easy answers as the story unfolds. Beautifully made, with the filmmaker himself in the main role. Highly recommended.
