Sócrates

Sócrates, dir. Alexandre Moratto, 2018, Brazil, 71m, in Portuguese with subtitles 💖
Thursday, June 27, 9:15 pm, Victoria Theatre

Sócrates (Christian Malheiros, right)
Sócrates is a 15-year-old boy, living alone with his mother. The story opens with Sócrates finding his mãe died in her sleep, and follows him as he tries to make his way in the world on his own, trying to find a job, a place to live (or just stay the night), and ultimately even something to eat. He has to deal with his mother’s employer, various bureaucrats, family, and a co-worker who seems to want more of a connection, but ultimately must rely on himself. The filmmaker, Alex Moratto, tells an engrossing and deeply personal story, clearly with some elements of his own life. Christian Malheiros brings the title role to life with authenticity and grace. Not an upbeat story, to be sure, but definitely a MUST SEE.

This film was produced by young people, ages 16 to 20, with the help of the Querô Institute, a non-governmental organization, recognized by UNICEF, that uses audiovisual media as a tool for inclusion and transformation of marginalized young people. It would have been a remarkable achievement for an experienced crew, but doubly so for people so young and so close to this story and many other similar stories.
