Solos

Friday, June 20, 6:00 pm, Victoria Theatre

Shot mostly in black-and-white and entirely without dialogue (although not without sound), Solos is based on a true story of an affair between a male teacher and his male student. The visuals are rich, and the sexual expression is explicit enough to get the film banned in its native Singapore. However, ultimately I found the lack of all dialogue left me without a good sense of who the characters were or what was driving them, leaving me disappointed in the overall film experience. Recommended for film school students to see what you can — and cannot — achieve without words, but otherwise not recommended.

Solos, dir. Kan Lume and Loo Zihan, 2007 Singapore 70 min., no dialogue

Note: I've tagged this one "subtitled" because it contains no dialogue.
