We open with a priest addressing a small group of women: “Nothing is more beautiful than an obedient woman.” The other women are all giving Margarita the side-eye. She’s tired of the disapproval of the community, so she finally leaves her husband and skips town. Shortly after, she meets Liana, a deaf American tourist. Verbal communication is thus very limited, but eventually their bodies do the talking on the dance floor, thanks to the magic of salsa. Well done, highly recommended.

Sam brings Olivia home from a fantastic first date, and they start to get physical, but Sam has some issues around body dysphoria that interrupt the flow. Olivia, with sensitivity and grace, helps Sam confront feeling comfortable in his own body. Strikingly heartfelt and authentic (not least because Sam is played by the writer/‌director/‌producer, Cam Killion, but Marisa Bertani also shines as Olivia), this film is exemplary of why I keep coming back to Frameline year after year. Absolutely and enthusiastically a MUST SEE!

Saarth and Nakul have been dating for two turbulent years and are meeting up on the beach, but get their wires crossed, ending up at opposite ends of the beach. They eventually have to, both literally and figuratively, meet in the middle. Very well done, highly recommended.

My advice: do not watch the preview and don’t read the description on IMDb or in the Frameline program guide. The preview is just a random clip near the beginning and gives none of the flavor of what makes this film special; the Frameline program gives spoilers.

Marina is moving back to 🇷🇪Réunion (a French island east of Madagascar, legally an integral part of the republic) and needs to sell her mattress; Charlie is moving into the apartment left to her by her grandmother. But of course it’s not that simple: Charlie doesn’t have a car, and Marina is leaving today. They struggle to walk the mattress the short distance from one apartment to the other, and discover they have a connection, but what can they do with a 9,000 km separation looming over them? Great writing, acting, directing, and editing, making for a joy to watch. Must see.

Sophie is an American doing a “study abroad” program in Spain. Her new friend Gloria is teaching her lots of useful everyday Spanish, like “Me cago en tu puto padre!” Sophie has a crush on Gloria, but her boyfriend leaves her messages at least daily, making her hesitant to make a move. During a soccer game, Sophie breaks Gloria’s arm, complicating their relationship even farther. Good story, well acted, but some annoying jump cuts and splices of what looks like old shot-on-film home movies are a bit distracting. Still, it’s a fun ride, highly recommended

Andrew is a trans man who works as a mechanic, somewhere in Ohio. To his dismay, he finds himself pregnant, which means crossing state lines to get an abortion. A drag queen named Lex goes on the road trip, which has some twists and turns. Intriguing storyline, well done, highly recommended
