Merchant Ivory James Ivory (left) |
James Ivory (1928 – present) is from Klamath Falls, Oregon; Ismail Merchant (1936 – 2005) was from India. The two collaborated on more than 40 films, including landmarks like
A Room with a View, Maurice, and
Howards End. They were also lovers, and injected subversive subtexts (gay, but also in other respects) in multiple films. This documentary explores their relationship, their work, their collaborators, and their lives in general, with numerous clips from their films and extensive interviews with James Ivory himself and with the people who worked with them. It’s a fascinating look into the lives and work of a couple who left an indelible mark on cinema history.
MUST SEE, especially for students of film history.
