A high school junior has transferred to a new school. They don’t have a basketball team (The nuns don’t approve of girls’ basketball.), so, at the urging of the coach, she tries volleyball. She has a hard time fitting in with her teammates, especially given her obvious lack of previous experience, but gradually makes friends with one girl in particular, the team captain — but does she feel the same way? It’s cute and sweet, at turns poignant and funny, and remarkably unencumbered by Traditional Values. It’s a joy to watch (although I personally didn’t need the entire 15 minutes of the big championship match). Definitely a
MUST SEE for anyone into girls’ sports, and highly recommended even if you’re not.
Samantha Lee has had two previous films at Frameline, neither of which I reviewed here:
Billie and Emma (Frameline43, 2019) and
Maybe Tomorrow (Frameline41, 2017).
