An 18-year-old woman sits by a campfire with her 39-year-old future self
My Old Ass

Elliott (Maisy Stella), a free-spirited 18-year-old lesbian, is enjoying her last few weeks at home on her family’s rural cranberry farm before shipping off to the big city for university. She and her best friends go camping in the woods and take some shrooms. Elliott is alone by the campfire when suddenly someone appears next to her, explains that she is the 39-year-old Elliott from the future (Aubrey Plaza), and gives her some cryptic advice. But do you trust the advice from your future self? Elliott eventually has to just trust her gut.

The “self from the future” angle is a cute plot device to distract (but not detract) from the underlying message in the advice itself. Although My Old Ass is clearly intended as a comedy, there are plenty of though-provoking emotional moments as Elliott re-evaluates her relationships with her family, friends, and home. And I would be remiss not to mention that Chad (Percy Hynes White), the young man who ignites a bit of bi-curious in Elliott, is magnetically cute. It’s sweet and light, but with real heart; definitely a MUST SEE. In particular, don’t miss the Justin Bieber fantasy scene!

My Old Ass premiered at Sundance, and was the opening film for this year’s InsideOut (Toronto) Film Festival.
